Soused herring cake / Marinuotos silkės tortas

Herring... Mmmmm.... I have tasted both Lithuanian and Swedish variously prepared herrings and I like them all more or less. And I totally can't understand my brother who eats herring only once in a year - as a traditional dish on Christmas eve table.
Swedish midsummer celebration with lots of herring on the table is a feast for me. And a feast requires a cake. A herring cake!

Silkė silkutė... Mmmmm... Esu skanavusi įvairiausiai paruoštos tiek lietuviškos, tiek švediškos silkės ir man jos visos daugiau ar mažiau patinka. Negaliu suprasti savo brolio, kuris valgo silkę tik vieną kartą metuose - kaip tradicinį Kūčių stalo patiekalą.
Švediškas vidurvasario stalas nukrautas silke - tikra puota man. O puotai reikia torto. Silkių torto!

Soused herring cake // Marinuotos silkės tortas

220 g dark coarse bread / 220 g juodos rupios duonos
75 g butter / 75 g sviesto
2 gelatin leaves = 1 tsp gelatin powder / 2 želatinos lapeliai = 1 arb. š. želatinos miltelių
200 g soused herring / 200 g marinuotos silkės
1 red onion / 1 raudonas svogūnas
3 tbsp chopped chive / 3 valg. š. smulkinto laiškinio česnako
1 tbsp chopped dill / 1 valg. š. smulkintų krapų
300 ml sour cream / 300 ml grietinės
150 g cream cheese / 150 g kreminio sūrio

Melt the butter. Mix the bread in a kitchen machine till crumbs, add melted butter and mix again. Spread the crumbs in a spring form (24 cm) and press them to form a firm cake bottom. Refrigerate while the cake top will be prepared.
Drain the herrings and chop them nicely. Chop the onion. Mix together herring, onion and 1/3 of chive.
Put gelatin into a small amount of cold water for 5 min. Mix together sour cream and cream cheese. Take a little of this mixture and warm it in the pot on low heat. Melt gelatin in it and remove from the heat.  Now mix together with the rest of mixture. Add herring mixture and stir well.
Spread the creamy herring mixture on the bread crumbs and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Before serving sprinkle the rest of the chive on top.

For me this cake was the best tasting dish in our midsummer menu. Yamee yamee!

Šis tortas man buvo skaniausias patiekalas mūsų vidurvasario meniu. Niam niam!
